Earlier this week, SEFCU President & CEO Michael Castellana presented The Metropolitan Community Group Minister of Community Life and Outreach Michael Poindexter with a $15,000 grant check to provide aid for the organization's summer Camp program. This grant is part of a 3-year $45,000 commitment from SEFCU.
Metropolitan Community Group's summer camp program allows inner city youth to have a safe environment to participate in various events including swimming, arts, enrichment, and field trips to museums, water parks, zoos, colleges, learning centers and sporting facilities. The program, which serves more than 200 youth, also provides meals to participants.
“This grant from SEFCU will enable us to continue to positively impact our community, specifically our summer camp,” said Poindexter. “Last year we welcomed over 265 campers through our doors, provided them a healthy well-balanced meal, amazing trips to water parks, museums, etc.; swimming each day, and 30 minutes of literacy learning each morning. We've maintained a $60-$65 per week tuition for a Monday-Friday, full-day 8:00 am - 5:15 pm camp because of generous partners like SEFCU."
Poindexter added that SEFCU's grant also supports the offering of scholarships to 15-20 campers each summer who attend camp tuition-free.
“SEFCU is proud to partner with the Metropolitan Community Group to provide affordable youth summer camp that not only keeps the kids safe, but also provides the youth with meals and leadership skills,” said SEFCU’s Chief Community Officer Kathy Lanni. “They run an incredible program and I am confident the skills and life lessons learned will have a long-term impact on the children they serve.”
SEFCU volunteers also assist at the camp and our Financial Well-Being team delivers educational sessions to campers and counselors. Stay tuned to AngelPoints for opportunities to volunteer at the Summer Camp and join our continued efforts to change lives every day!
