On December 14th, more than 30 SEFCU employees, along with their family and friends, volunteered their time with Wreaths Across America at Saratoga National Cemetery. Every year, through Wreaths Across America, millions of Americans come together to remember and honor our fallen soldiers by placing wreaths on all of the gravestones in every national cemetery across the country. The goal of this organization and the message for this day is to remember our fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve, and teach our children the value of freedom.
Before heading out to lay wreaths on more than 13,000 grave stones in Saratoga, volunteers attended a moving ceremony where servicemen and women, advocates, and local public figures shared words about the importance of not forgetting those who served.
“I participate in this event each year for a number of reasons. The most important reason being for my family, as my grandmother and grandfather are buried there. It’s a special moment for us to lay a wreath on their gravestone and wish them both a Merry Christmas,” explained SEFCU employee, Aimee Moore. “It’s almost as special to lay wreaths on the gravestones of those I don’t know. Many of those buried there may no longer have family or friends who visit, so it’s an honor for me to spend a moment with them and read their name aloud so they are not forgotten.”
SEFCU employee, Larissa Zongo added, “For the last six years I’ve made sponsoring wreaths and volunteering with Wreaths Across America a part of my holiday tradition. Joining hundreds of volunteers in laying wreaths at veterans’ grave sites is a simple but really meaningful way to honor our nation’s heroes.”
In addition to enlisting our staff and their families to help with laying the wreaths each December, SEFCU supports the event by purchasing 150 of the wreaths that are laid locally.
